Robbie Elbertse in the lab

My name is Robbie Elbertse (officially Robertus J. G. Elbertse). I am currently a postdoctoral scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, USA), where I am part of the Nanoscale Processes and Measurements Group.

My research focuses on quantum phenomena at the atomic and nanoscale. I work mainly with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at low temperatures, including electron spin resonance STM, to study individual spins, engineered atomic structures, superconducting devices and nanomechanical systems. I am interested in how magnetic anisotropy, topology, and the surrounding electromagnetic environment can be used to control lifetimes and dynamics in these systems, and how careful instrumentation can open new ways to measure them.

In the laboratory I combine experiment design with practical instrumentation work. I have experience with ultra high vacuum systems, cryogenics down to dilution refrigerator temperatures, and STM control using Nanonis. For automation and data acquisition I mainly use LabVIEW, and for analysis and modelling I work in Python and related scientific tools. Part of my work involves designing and refining the RF and cryogenic hardware that enables STM and ESRSTM experiments to reach the required stability and signal quality.

Outside the lab I enjoy video and board games and occasionally design games myself. At the moment I am particularly interested in the One Piece Trading Card Game.
